"That dress. Where did you get it?"
"It was found aboard the ship. The crew it thought it was a spirit bringing some omen of ill fate."
"That's foolish.

This wedding dress was an attire most notably worn by Elizabeth Swann.

History [ ]

A Marriage Interrupted [ ]

Elizabeth Swann on her interrupted wedding day.

Elizabeth wore this dress on her planned wedding day. However, the wedding was interrupted by Royal Marines led by Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company. Elizabeth and her fiancé Will Turner were arrested for helping the infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow escape from Port Royal a year earlier. Elizabeth would wear the dress during her time in Fort Charles prison.[1]

Elizabeth still wore the dress as her father, Governor Weatherby Swann, was intent on saving her from the gallows by sending her to England. However, this attempt would fail as Governor Swann was caught by Ian Mercer. After retrieving Beckett's Letters of Marque from his office, Elizabeth stowed away aboard the Edinburgh Trader, where she removed her dress in exchange for men's clothing.[1]

Haunted Ship [ ]

"Captain Bellamy, we found this...dress. There's a female presence here with us... Everyone feels it."
"Ghost of a lady widowed before her marriage... Searching for her husband lost at sea.
"
―Bursar and Quartermaster to Bellamy [src]

The "haunted" dress aboard the Edinburgh Trader.

The dress was later found onboard the Edinburgh Trader by one of the ship's deckhands. The crew soon fought over the dress, particularly the Bursar and Quartermaster, until Captain Bellamy appeared on deck. Bellamy attempted to quash the idea that the ship was haunted, upon the crew's assumption of it belonging to a spirit, and ordered the crew to find whoever the dress belonged to, saying that "she's probably naked". Elizabeth, having overheard this conversation, planned to use the crew's superstitions to her advantage. She used the dress to make the sailors believe there was a ghost on the ship, which convinced Bellamy to sail for Tortuga. While Elizabeth left to join Jack Sparrow's crew aboard the Black Pearl, the dress would remain in the captain's cabin aboard the Edinburgh Trader.[1]

The dress lost at sea.

When Will was rescued at open sea by the crew of the Edinburgh Trader, he saw the dress in Captain Bellamy's cabin, and recognized it immediately. Before they could put the matter further, the Trader would fall under attack by the Kraken. Bursar would try to use the dress to stop the Kraken's attack, but to no avail. After the destruction of the Edinburgh Trader, the dress would be spotted by Davy Jones shortly before ordering to set course to Isla Cruces. The dress would remain lost in the ocean.[1]

Description [ ]

This wedding dress was white and golden, with a lot of lace and a long veil and train. It had three quarter length sleeves with lace at the ends. The dress was quite long in length and had beaded designs on it. It also had many layers of fabric and variation of shades.

Behind the scenes [ ]

  • This dress was designed by Penny Rose, the costume designer of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
"Keira has at least three different looks in DEAD MAN'S CHEST, because Elizabeth is really changing and maturing as well. Keira is very gung ho and will have a go at anything, so she really took to the boy's clothing that she wears for part of the film. She also wears a beautiful wedding gown, but we only see it drenched in the rain!"
"Having worked with Penny on 'Pirates' and 'King Arthur,' I feel like I've spent my life with her, and I love it. She is, in the best possible way, a perfectionist. One of my favorite parts of the film is before we start, having costume fittings with Penny and seeing her in charge of hundreds and hundreds of costumes. Yet, as soon as you get into her fitting room, she just cuts right to it. If you've got a button that's two millimeters out of place, Penny will move it. If something needs a bit of embroidery to be brought out, she sees it immediately. She's a forceful lady, and one that I'm very glad to have around.
"
―Penny Rose and Keira Knightley [src]
  • The wedding gown is a fine example of Penny Rose's minute attention to detail. It's comprised of a deep-ivory silk and raffia fabric embellished with a leaf, floral and fan design. Rose used the fabric as is for the skirts, but created her own design on the bodice by cutting around and repositioning the raffia details. The stomacher (front of the dress) looks almost embroidered, with layer upon layer of this raffia design sewn into it. The veil is an ivory silk chiffon, with delicate pearls sewn into the silk, attached to a wired tiara that also contains the raffia fabric from the dress. And the petticoat of the dress was actually constructed from an antique quilted cotton bedspread from Rome.[2]
